Empty homes premium

From 1 April 2013, owners of properties that have been empty and substantially unfurnished for more than 2 years will be charged a premium of 50% on top of the full Council Tax charge.

This means you will be paying 150% of the Council Tax charge.

This premium is applied in line with section 11B of the Local Government Finance Act 1992, which was amended by section 12 of the Local Government Finance Act 2012.

There are two exceptions:

  • a dwelling which is the sole or main residence of a member of the armed forces who is absent from the property as a result of such service
  • an annexe deemed unoccupied because it is being treated by the occupier of the main dwelling as part of that main dwelling.

If you have received a letter telling you your property will have the premium added but it is now occupied, please confirm the details through our council tax enquiry form of who the new occupiers are so liability can be amended.
